Description

Today is the 17th anniversary of the colombine massacre, the last week I've been really obsessing over this event - I'm not supporting any of these boys actions but I think it's importan to remember that both Dylan and Eric were victims too, but not on April 20th. They were just normal boys that were pushed over the edge because of bullying.

Columbine and the other more recent mass shootings illustrate the dire problems in mental healthcare, gun control laws, and how people fail to see signs of a demented mind and not act on seeing them treated before tragedies culminate. Harris and Klebold as far as I'm concerned were "victims" of their own madness and internal conflicts, clearly needed psychiatric treatment/therapy.

"Glorifying" them in this manner honestly does not make them more understandable, even if they did feel like they didn't matter among their peers and families. Jut imagine what their families and those of their victims have had to endure should be taken into consideration.

I do wish it had all been different for them as with others who were in their "shoes," yet I would rather see a piece where they serve as examples of what happens when the mentally disturbed are not taken seriously and what can happen as a result. Society, the system, and public should see them and others no different than anyone else. Anyone can be prey to mental illness, they really need all the help they can get, especially when they are another person's child. Hopefully others will have it better than these two did.
